Westin Timeshare Rentals

Question:

Hi, I seem to recall someone asked about the $695 Westin promo (1 week+$185 car rental+$75 resort credit). Well, they are pushing timeshare (vacation ownership) on a new resort up the street near Black Rock. You get another $100 resort credit if you attend the 90 min sales presentation. This was by far the best place we ever stayed
- and yes, we ended up buying an 1-bdr week.

Now my question - did I get suckered? Frankly we are having a bit of buyers remorse right now (eventhough it is our 10 year anni present, and we can afford it). The sales presentation stated it ending phase 1
(avail 2004, 2003 is comped at their hotels) - price is $27,000 w/
$900 annual fee, and it's something new Westin is trying (so not a lot of firm details). It is tied into all their hotels (Westin, Shearton, W, etc.) with no fees, so that made it appealing.

Your honest opinion is appreciated, since we do have a 7-day retraction period (4 days left.)

I would recommend taking advantage of this great offer. As for the timeshare, I don't know. From the searches I've seen so far Westin's 25k-40k price schedule (to 2005) seems reasonable, and Mariott's deeded timeshare on Kaanapali seems go around $25k in resale. Am I way off?

Answer:

Without knowing the details of what you've done to yourselves, I can't give you figures but I have attended more than a dozen time-share scam hustles and have yet to encounter one for which I'd pay a dime for both economic and touristic reasons.

Why, pray, would one want a kitchen on The Road? Don't you travel to learn about the cuisine of others and not eat what you do at home?

Why, pray, would one choose to stay where having a car is frequently a necessity whereas, in most cities, one is not?

Why, pray, do you care whether you have cable (or any) television (or a couch or an easy chair or immense closets or cook- and flat- ware when on The Road? Do you really spend more than nine, maybe ten, hours a day in your hotel room?

You said you spent $27,000 and will have additional costs. At $150 per night (about thrice what I average), that will buy you 180 hotel nights being about 25 weeks. If you normally take short vacations of four weeks or so, you will have broken even
