Some questions about Rent Timeshare
|
Question: I'm looking into renting a timeshare for one week, perhaps in Hawaii or
Mexico.
I've contacted a timeshare broker by the name of
Timeshare Travel. They claim to handle sale, rental and exchange of
timeshares.
** Question 1: Has anybody dealt with this outfit? Are they reputable?
They told me about a program they have called Condo Time Plus (or something like that). A prospective renter (i.e. me) pays them $195 for membership. As a member, you can then rent a timeshare for $300 to $400, which the broker claims normally rent for $600 to $1200 per week.
** Question 2: Any comments on renting a timeshare in this way?
** Question 3: Got any ideas on renting a timeshare for the lowest possible
rate?
Answer: The biggest question to ask is whether they can get you the condo you want *when* you want it. I am a member of Interval International, and when we try
to exchange our timeshare for another one in their system we frequently cannot
get the week that we want and/or the location that we want simply because the
demand exceeds the supply, possibly because of extra people who *rent*
For example, last June we submitted a requst for a condo anywhere on Maui or
Oahu (about 20 possible condo complexes) for the first week in January. We waited
until November with no luck. The exchange representative said that they could only
take us the last week in January; for us that was no good because of school .
The general problem with these exchange clubs is that once they get your membership
fee they don't have very much incentive to actually deliver anything. I'm sure you *can* rent a timeshare for half of retail price, IF YOU CAN GET ONE. If you are very
flexible about when and where you want to go, then timeshares may be the most
economical way for you to travel. But consider: with cash you can pretty much go
wherever you want whenever you want, without planning six months ahead.
