Disney Vacation Club Timeshare Rentals

Question:

My wife and I just got back from WDW and went to the Disney Vacation Club presentation at Old Key West. we were wondering if any one has any opinions (good or bad) on this timeshare . We do plan an rental vacation trip to Florida every year so it might almost make sense.... Thanks,

Answer:

This is what's called a "can of worms." There are a LOT of variables to consider, but to keep it simple, the answer is "maybe," IF you plan to go to WDW and/or Vero Beach every year (or somewhere else DVC may open a resort).

The quick-and-dirty method is to figure how much you would spend for on-property lodging every year, and be sure to inflate that about 10% annually. Then, figure the cost of the DVC purchase (including annual dues, inflating at roughly 5% annually) and subtract the actual value of any park passes you will get _and use_ as part of your membership, if applicable. You can then compare the results to get a _rough_ idea of how long the payback period is.

It's not really an investment; rather, it's more like prepaid (very nice) lodging with some fringe benefits.

BTW, it's not really a "timeshare" in that it's a points-based system.
